New York

Carlos studied at Pratt Institute, where he learned to draw the figure with patience and precision. [Where he grew up, his family, and what drew him to painting.]

San Miguel de Allende

He came to San Miguel in [YEAR] and never really left. The light, the stone, and the town's habit of painting its walls gave him room to work at the scale he dreamed in. Neighbours knew him as the man on the scaffold, waving with a brush in his hand.

[A line Carlos often said, chosen by Vivian.]

The visionary work

His paintings gather jaguars, suns, owls and quiet, closed-eyed faces into one luminous geometry. Many grew out of meditation and ceremony; he described them as maps of what lies behind ordinary sight. With Xóchitl Ashe he created the Sacred Mushroom Oracle deck, and for years he taught workshops where students learned to paint the same way.

Vivian

[How Carlos and Vivian met, their life together, and what she would like people to know about him.]
